Improving health and wellbeing for all.
United Way of Greater New Bedford advances equitable access to basic needs and strengthens physical, mental, and social well-being to build safe, thriving communities. We are committed to a future where every person -regardless of income, background, or zip code - has the opportunity to live a healthy life.
Nutrition & Food Security
Food insecurity is more than hunger - it undermines health, dignity, and opportunity. No one should have to choose between putting food on the table and paying for rent, utilities, or medication.
United Way of Greater New Bedford mobilizes resources and partners with local food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, and Councils on Aging to secure and distribute nutritious food across our region. We prioritize access to fresh, healthy options and strengthen the local hunger relief network to ensure families, seniors, and individuals have reliable access to the nourishment they need. By addressing food insecurity, we create a stronger foundation for health, stability, and economic mobility.
Mental Health
Mental health is essential to overall well-being, yet stigma and limited access to care prevent too many people from receiving support.
United Way of Greater New Bedford works alongside healthcare providers, educators, and grassroots leaders to expand equitable, community-based mental health supports. From peer connection programs and trauma-informed services to crisis response and prevention efforts, we are building a system that is compassionate, accessible, and responsive. Our goal is clear: everyone deserves the opportunity to heal, grow, and thrive.
Maternal & Child Health
Access to quality maternal and child healthcare is fundamental to strong families and healthy communities. Yet persistent disparities in care continue to put mothers and children at risk.
United Way of Greater New Bedford partners with healthcare providers and community organizations to reduce inequities, improve outcomes, and ensure caregivers can navigate complex systems with confidence. By investing early in maternal and child health, we strengthen lifelong well-being and intergenerational opportunity.
Substance Misuse
Substance misuse impacts individuals, families, and entire communities—but recovery is possible.
United Way of Greater New Bedford supports prevention, early intervention, and recovery-oriented programs that promote strength-based, trauma-informed approaches. We equip individuals and families with tools, education, and community supports that foster resilience, self-direction, and long-term wellness.
